For 9 months, 95 of Denver’s brightest leaders came together through the Downtown Denver Leadership Program, an initiative of the Downtown Denver Partnership, to collaborate in addressing some of the distinct challenges of the 16th Street Mall. Charged to help transform a block of the Mall from Champa to Stout, the class responded with Urban Tangle. Composed of 4.8 miles of paracord, 10 spun chairs, 135 lanterns and 37 cans of washable chalk, the Urban Tangle took on a dynamic state of temporary permanence. It became a living, breathing example of placemaking; a space that capitalizes on our local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential; a space planned for diverse and inclusive human activity. Hyatt's work with Hands On Education, a non-profit organization providing vocational training and job placement for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, started with one hotel in 1998. Young adults with challenges keeping them from traditional training programs became paid Hyatt employees for a two-week program, preparing them for hospitality jobs such as culinary arts, housekeeping, laundry, engineering and maintenance, shipping and receiving, banquet setup, and convention services. The clip above celebrates the achievements of Kyle Severson, a graduate of the program.
